What's happening before camp
Wednesday 24th April 2008
Wow, it’s hard to believe in 1 week the site crew will be setting up for our next festival. A lot has happened this year.
Jen and Paul were away in Finland studying from July to December. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing - we could carry on doing some of the festival planning from over there!
Coordinators/Volunteers
Since we came back lots of changes have happened. First was Ricci (Workshops/Performance coordinator) who has got a new job and sadly had to leave the planning team. The good news is he is still coming to the festival to party with us!
Next we agreed to bring more coordinators on to the team so the big roles are all in pairs now. We hope that every year we can “train” more new coordinators so the community can really run this festival and Jen and Paul can take a break!
We have Vicky who is working with Paulus in the children’s area, Sibaji (he did the amazing curry night last year) is working with Gavin in the catering, and Verity working with Marie on communicator team.
We also have a new information coordinator (Claire P) and Celia who was doing our grant applications has agreed to coordinate workshops too. Poor old Emma is still on her own with first aid – maybe next year we can try and get some funding to get some first aid training for a few people. Gillian has taken over the art team and has lots of ideas and energy.
We have a new team too – Jen D and Claire H have got together with Kirklees Council to make sure we sort and RECYCLE our rubbish this year. One of the aims of Sign Circle is to be more environmentally friendly so that is a great start.
We are also looking forward to welcoming Scott who will organise our evening entertainment, and Rachel who has worked so hard on all the publicity.
Funding
Yesterday we got some brilliant news that N Power are donating straw bales, volunteer t shirts and a couple of other things to the festival (worth £1700!!!) This is brilliant news and well done to Celia for all her hard work with the grants. Sadly the Arts Council turned us down again and we have not heard from Awards for All.
Activities
There is a new outdoor activity this year – a 50 feet long underground tunnel, plus all the favourites from last year.
We are having a try at African Drumming with Paul Dear from Rhythm Bridge (in the Deaf club to feel best vibrations) and there will be a chance to prepare a drama performance for Sunday evening with Mary-Jane Russell. Gills has got loads of arts ideas and we have a new zoolab workshop for under 5’s on Saturday morning as well as the animal mix presentation that we loved last year.
And Yes! We really are going to create a sauna tent. I am sure the weather will be kind to us – Sign Circle 2007 had the best weather of all last summer – we played outside in t shirts!!! After May it rained. And rained. And rained! But just in case we need to warm our bodies this year we can have a steamy sauna, outdoors in nature!
Performances and evening entertainment
On Friday evening we will be visited by a cheeky puppet from “Frolicked” puppet company, before John Smith comes on the stage at 9pm. We have a quiz and Ramesh performing on Saturday and on Sunday we hope that some of YOU will come on the stage and entertain us – if you have a joke, poem, signed song, small performance THIS IS YOUR CHANCE to be FAMOUS!!! We also hope to show a DVD from last year’s festival. Later we will have a lantern procession/ party and of course enjoy the big fires. Exciting!
DVD
Martin will be filming for an official Sign Circle DVD which we hope to sell later in the year. Let the information team know if you DO NOT want to be on the film! You will recognise Martin because he will be wearing a BLUE Sign Circle Film Crew T Shirt.
Tickets
We have almost sold out of tickets (12 left I think) and the volunteer teams are all full (even catering team! We are surprised about that because the team was so small last year they all worked full time and we thought the would never come back! But they have plenty of hands this year.)
So that’s it for now. It’s a very exciting (and busy) time for us at the planning office. Look forward to seeing you next week.
Big grins from Jen, Paul and all the Crew X
